► Canine Genetic Diseases Network
Description: Canine Genetic Diseases Network.
Researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Veterinary Medicine and collaborators at several colleges and institutions throughout the country and the world are searching for genetic mutations that cause disease and suffering in dogs. This website is designed to provide information on these projects and serve as a resource for those concerned with canine diseases: breeders, owners, veterinarians, and researchers.
Information presented here is not a substitute for an accurate diagnosis and specific advice geared to your pet's needs. If you suspect your dog has one of the diseases discussed here, we encourage you to have a veterinarian examine the dog and advise you. We also encourage you to participate in the research and help find answers.

► Tracheal collapse
Description: Tracheal collapse is commonly seen in small breed dogs such as Yorkshire terriers, Poodles, and Pomeranians to name a few
Tracheal collapse is caused by a progressive weakening of the the tracheal rings
When medical treatment is not effective surgery is a good option
Prognosis is good following surgery

► BSD Information
Description: Many young Pomeranians develope a luxurious puppy or first hair coat which fails to shed and is not replaced by an adult coat. As the puppy coat ages it breaks off and falls out and can result in a dog that is hairless over much of its body. This disease is sometimes called black skin disease, coat funk or woolly coat. It also occurs in Keeshonden and Alaskan Malamutes. Although females can have the disease, it is much more common in males. This suggests, but does not prove, that the mutation responsible for the disease is on the X chromosome. We propose to determine if a DNA marker from the canine X chromosome associates with the disease. If so, this marker could then be used to distinguish genetically normal puppies from puppies that are likely to develop the disease. This marker could also identify female puppies that will not develop the disease but are likely to pass the disease on to the next generation.

► Hair Loss Study
Description: First, THANK YOU for participating in this important research project! The samples you provide will allow researchers to continue discovering the genes controlling traits in our breed, and dogs in general. As the canine genome is mapped, breeders will have an unprecedented opportunity to identify and avoid producing disease, and concentrate on positive advances in their breeding programs.

► Hypoglycemia Symptoms and Treatment
Description: Hypoglycemia Symptoms and Treatment.
Hypoglycemia is a sudden fall in the concentration of glucose in the blood below normal levels. The body uses glucose as its primary energy source. The brain, for example, is completely dependent upon glucose to function. The liver is responsible for manufacturing glucose and for storing it in a usable form, for release into the blood stream as needed. Muscle tissues store some of the important materials used in this process.
Hypoglycemia Must Be Treated
Transient Juvenile Hypoglycemia, which is brought on by fasting, is common in Toy dog breeds, such as Yorkshire Terrier, Toy Poodle, Pomeranian and other Toy dog breeds, and usually seen in puppies 5 to 16 weeks of age. Stress, low body temperature, poor nutrition, sudden change in feed, water and schedule patterns, infections, and premature birth may precipitate the onset of hypoglycemia. Some puppies, bred exclusively for tiny size ("teacup Yorkies", "teacup Chihuahua"), are even more predisposed to Transient Juvenile Hypoglycemia since insufficient muscle mass may make it difficult for the body to store the glucose and keep its blood sugar properly regulated.

► AlopeciaX
Description: AlopeciaX-This condition was named “Alopecia X” in order to reflect the lack of knowledge surrounding this condition and its causes. Given that there are numerous therapies that work for some cases and not for others and that many of these therapies seem to be in complete opposition, it may be that Alopecia X is not one disease but several and we simply do not know how to distinguish them.
Alopecia X has goes by many names:
